Residents warned of water supply shortage in St. Stephen

A water shortage is impacting St. Stephen. 

On Tuesday, the Municipal District of St. Stephen issued an alert through its Alertable app. 

“Due to ongoing drought conditions that have been persisting all year, there is a water shortage affecting MDSS,” the alert states. “Utility staff have been carefully monitoring levels on an ongoing basis, hoping for significant rainfall, which has not come and is not in the forecast.” 

It said the municipality has crossed the threshold where staff no longer feel comfortable monitoring the data of the water supply. 

“We have been taking measures as a municipality to mitigate this, such as shutting down the splash bad, delaying water main flushing, and restricting industry from doing the same,” it reads. 

It is asking residents to reduce water consumption where possible. 

“A water shortage can result in not having an adequate supply to fight fires and a reduction of water available for personal, household and business use,” it said. 

The water shortage notice is expected to remain in place until conditions improve, with weekly updates.
