An entrepreneur in the making: Pyper Galpin

Deadman’s Harbour ⋅ She’s only eight years old but Pyper Galpin is already an entrepreneur in the making and you can find her products for sale at Comeau’s Seafood Restaurant in Pennfield.

During the summer vacation, the soon to be Grade 3 student, has been busy making decorative key chains, which sell for $2 and $3 each, and recently branched out into making wooden Christmas tree ornaments which sell for $3, as well.

The idea to make them, said Pyper, came from her mother, Brandy Comeau, who works at the restaurant and she orders the necessary supplies online. Her key chains are decorated with everything from tortoises to flip flops and anchors.

“She was looking for ideas to make some money and she enjoys doing it. She also earns a little for doing chores like washing dishes and keeping her room clean”, her mother said.

Pyper estimates she can whip up a key chain in about five minutes and painting the ornaments only takes a minute or so while her mother attaches the jute to hang them.

She has made $350 in sales in a month, which doesn’t include the cost of supplies, and she said she is saving up to buy gifts for other people although she would eventually like to get a new tiny four-wheeler.

Pyper, who will be entering Grade 3 at Blacks Harbour Elementary School in the fall, said she loves school and, although it’s early days yet, thinks she would like to become a teacher as she enjoys helping other students in her class.

Comeau said they moved to Deadman’s Harbour four years ago from Amherst, Nova Scotia where her mother did tole paintings which sold really well so she is thinking about that as their next project. Pyper said she would also enjoy making necklaces and bracelets.

When she’s not working on her crafts, Pyper said she likes to play on her big trampoline or go to the school park. She plays basketball and soccer and is also involved in gymnastics. She also likes to read and to draw and loves music.
