There was a moment when Sari Green said the ideas for her novel started flowing—and the process continued naturally from there.
The Drowned Fortress is the first book in the epic fantasy series, The Godchild Saga. Green said there are five books expected throughout the series.
“It follows the main character Casandra. In one world she was created by the Gods to be the nemesis or the one [who] ultimately destroys the Dark Lord, which was the fallen God,” she said. “In order to keep her hidden until they needed her, she was actually born of a woman in this world.”
Green said suddenly Casandra finds herself—at just 18-years-old—pulled into this other world.
Over the course of the five books, she is tasked with finding five crystals that together will ultimately connect as a puzzle she must solve. She also must learn about who she is and figure out her own powers.
“I’ve always loved fantasy, but I was looking for a story that was more emotional and personal rather than adventure,” she said. “There is adventure in this book, but it is more personal.”
It is a novel 10 years in the making, Green said. A flurry of ideas began forming into a narrative that will span five books.

“I have to be in the mood,” she said, of her writing style. “I sit down, I create an outline, and I go chapter by chapter. I do all my own editing.”
Green explains that if she finds something—such as an idea or part of a chapter—that doesn’t work, she removes it or alters it so it does work.
But more than the process, Green built in a personal connection to the character she has breathed life into. Casandra is her middle name.
“I’ve gone through a lot of struggles in life and I’m still going through a lot of struggles, and this character is also going through struggles that she has to learn how to accept and deal with,” she said. “It is about living with who you are, learning to accept yourself, and emotional honesty.”
She hopes others find a connection in those principles.
