For 16 summers and counting, Saint Andrews has welcomed some of New Brunswick’s most competitive tennis players to its picturesque courts for a tournament that celebrates sport, sportsmanship, and community spirit.
From August 8 to 10, the Saint Andrews Tennis Masters will once again bring together players from across the Maritimes in an event that’s become a cherished tradition on the provincial tennis calendar.
Hosted by the Saint Andrews Community Tennis Association (SACTA), in partnership with Tennis New Brunswick, the Masters tournament offers a rare blend of high-level competition and welcoming community vibes. From seasoned veterans to first-time participants in their thirties, the event showcases what SACTA calls its “tennis for life” philosophy — a belief that tennis can be enjoyed competitively at virtually any age.
“We have age categories ranging from 30-plus to 75-plus,” said SACTA president Mary Wobma. “It’s inspiring to see players in their 70s and even 80s taking the court with energy, passion, and skill. It really shows how lifelong the game can be.”
While the matchups are taken seriously — the tournament is part of Tennis NB’s Masters series and contributes to player rankings — there’s an unmistakable camaraderie both on and off the courts. Local businesses step up to sponsor prizes, volunteers ensure things run smoothly, and the sidelines often buzz with friendly conversation, laughter, and encouragement.
“Even though players come here to compete, there’s a real sense of connection,” Wobma said. “It’s about the game, yes, but it’s also about gathering with people who love the sport and contributing to the town’s energy for a weekend.”
Spectators are welcome — and encouraged — to attend. Matches are free to watch and are expected to run from 9 a.m. until early evening each day. A shaded seating area and space for lawn chairs make it an ideal spot to take in some top-tier tennis in one of the country’s most beloved resort towns.
Depending on the number of registrants, tournament play may begin on Aug. 8. Players must register by Aug. 5 via the Tennis New Brunswick website, www.tennisnb.ca. Events include men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, all played within relevant age categories.
While many of the competitors come from across New Brunswick, the draw of the Saint Andrews Masters has, in past years, extended beyond provincial borders — with entrants travelling from as far as Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and even Ontario.
For the local tennis community, the tournament is about more than the competition. It’s part of a broader effort to foster year-round enthusiasm for the game. SACTA offers regular adult and youth programming, from Tuesday night social matches to summer camps and beginner clinics. It’s not unusual for curious newcomers — or visiting tourists — to stop by the courts and end up picking up a racquet themselves.
“Tennis has this wonderful way of bringing people together,” Wobma said, who began playing the sport at 27 and now, at 72, still plays regularly. “Whether you’re competing in a Masters tournament or just rallying with a neighbour, there’s joy in the rhythm of the game.”
That joy is at the heart of why SACTA continues to host the Masters year after year. For them, the weekend isn’t just about winners and rankings — it’s about creating a vibrant space for sport in the heart of the town.
So whether you’re a player looking to test your game, or simply a fan who enjoys a good rally and a great atmosphere, the 2025 St. Andrews Tennis Masters promises another ace weekend on the courts.
