The smiles say it all at Passamaquoddy Lodge, where a new soft-serve ice-cream machine has quickly become one of the most popular additions to the long-term care home.
The machine was officially presented to the Lodge this summer, following donations from the Saint Andrews Kiwanis Club and The Bergmann Charitable Gift Fund, during the Passamaquoddy Lodge Foundation’s recent fundraising campaign. Though residents have been enjoying it for several weeks already, the presentation marked a moment of recognition for everyone who helped make the project possible.
The machine was one of the “fun” asks in the foundation’s fall fundraising campaign, which also included practical needs like mobile food delivery carts and specialized Broda chairs. The appeal of ice-cream was simple: “It gives the residents so much joy,” said Jane Lauzier, an activities volunteer at the lodge.
Soft-serve ice-cream is also extremely versatile and can be enjoyed by residents regardless of diet, turned into milkshakes or cakes, and served alongside barbecues and celebrations. Staff say the machine has already been part of birthday parties and summer gatherings, giving residents the chance to enjoy a simple treat that carries memories of family get-togethers and community fairs.
The Passamaquoddy Lodge Foundation exists to fill gaps in government funding for items that improve quality of life for residents. Past campaigns have provided an outdoor courtyard, palliative care spaces, and essential medical equipment.
The ice-cream machine is another sweet success story. Each cup served is a reminder of how community support can turn something small into something meaningful.
