The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has determined the actions of RCMP in St. Stephen did not cause the death of a man who entered the St. Croix River on Nov. 15 following a pursuit by police.
According to the provincial watchdog, who is responsible for investigating all incidents where injuries or fatalities have occurred involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, two officers attempted to arrest a male who was wanted on outstanding warrants. He fled and entered the St. Croix River and did not resurface.
“The SiRT Director has reviewed all available information in detail, including police files, body worn camera and video footage from local businesses,” it said.
SiRT said the male began swimming away from the shore.
“The evidence is clear that the actions of the officers did not result in the death of the male, and it was not foreseeable that the male would enter the water,” the release from SiRT said. “Therefore, it has been determined that this case does not meet SiRT’s mandate for an investigation.”
Police called for the male to return to shore, but when he didn’t, emergency medical services and the fire department rescue team were dispatched. A significant search was held on Nov. 16 using the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol.
His body was discovered and recovered near the point of entry to the water.
“This is a tragic situation and SiRT offers our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the male.”
