Hundreds of people turned out at three locations – St. George, St. Stephen and Deer Island – to help raise $129,480 for Charlotte County Cancer’s 24th annual Walk Cause We Care, Saturday.
In St. George, where the walk started from the Magaguadavic Centre, there was also a market, a touch-a-truck, a silent auction where you could bid on everything from meals and gift baskets to hotel accommodation, and free gifts; with all proceeds going to CCC.

In St. Stephen, the walk began at the Guardian Drug Store, and on Deer Island at Deer Island Point Park.
The largest team came from Cooke Aquaculture, dressed in their bright pink shirts, and there were quite a few dogs who also took part with their owners. The top fundraiser in St. George was 79-year-old Linda Barwell of Back Bay, who raised $4,385.
She has participated every year since the walk started and, inevitably, is the top fundraiser. Even though she was not able to walk herself this year, she said wouldn’t miss the event.
CCC was established in 1958 to alleviate some of the financial burdens and worries for those fighting and living with cancer. Over the last 60 years, volunteers with the organization have helped Charlotte County residents fighting cancer with their unplanned costs such as drugs, supplies and transportation.
Next year will be a special one for Walk Cause We Care – the 25th anniversary – and, to date, the event has raised more than $2 million.
