Canada Games Spotlight: St. Stephen’s Thomas Richardson

Canada Games Spotlight: St. Stephen’s Thomas Richardson

As part of The Courier’s series highlighting Charlotte County athletes competing at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s, N.L., we’re proud to feature Thomas Richardson, a 16-year-old emerging baseball talent from St. Stephen who’s set to step into the ring—or rather, onto the diamond—for men’s baseball.

For Thomas, representing St. Stephen and New Brunswick means everything. “I’m proud to come from St. Stephen and to represent my community and province at the national level,” he says, his voice filled with hometown pride.

His baseball journey began when he was just five, lacing up his cleats for the St. Stephen Sabres. Seven years ago, he elevated his game by joining the Port City Pirates in Saint John, competing at the AAA level ever since. Along the way, he’s played in two Ray Carter Cups (15U Nationals), the 17U Canada Cup, and the 18U National Championship.

What does he love about the game? “I love the challenge of baseball—it’s a mental game,” Thomas explains. “It’s taught me mental toughness and how to battle through hard times. Plus, I’ve made friends from all over the province—teammates I’d never have met without baseball.”

Training has intensified as the Games approach. He’s split his time between strength workouts, bullpen sessions at the Saint John fieldhouse, and regular practices with both his 18U AAA Pirates and the NB Canada Games squad. “Thinking about playing and doing my best at the national level keeps me motivated and focused,” he says.

Thomas credits much of his growth to two supporters close to home: “My dad has coached me for four years, drives me everywhere, drills with me in the offseason. And my grandfather Greg—my biggest fan—has travelled across the country to cheer me on.”

Among his proudest accomplishments are earning the 15U AAA Pitcher of the Year title in 2023, as well as pitching complete games to help secure both the provincial and Atlantic championship titles that same season.

His advice to younger athletes from small towns is simple and heartfelt: “Push yourself out of your comfort zone…Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from doing something.”

From little league diamonds to national arenas, Thomas Richardson is carrying St. Stephen with him—proof that big dreams start small and rise on determination.

The Courier will feature all of the athletes from Charlotte County who are competing in the Canada Summer Games in this spotlight series.
