Wesley United Church in St. Andrews will host Labours of Love, a special silent auction fundraiser on Sunday, October 26, 2025 from 2 to 4 p.m., bringing together the artistry and generosity of the community in one joyful afternoon. The event, featuring handcrafted items and gift certificates from local creators and businesses, supports the church’s 2026 fundraising campaign, which has been boosted by an anonymous donor’s promise to match up to $25,000 in contributions raised beyond the congregation’s annual budget.
Reverend Bob Johnson, who helped organize the event, says this year’s Labours of Love carries on a meaningful tradition first started in 2008 by local resident Chris Ross who passed away in the spring of this year. “Chris asked people to give something they had created themselves — something that came from their love of the craft,” Johnson explained. “It was a beautiful expression of community, and we wanted to revive that spirit as a way of remembering her.”
Among the nearly 30 items up for bid are works by some of Charlotte County’s most talented artists, living and past. One of the most anticipated pieces is a watercolour by the late Simone Ritter, a beloved local artist originally from Germany whose paintings are celebrated for their emotional vibrancy and coastal imagery. The piece — a serene boat scene set in Grand Manan — exemplifies Ritter’s signature style and stands as both a tribute to her artistry and her lasting influence on the local arts community.
Other highlights include a hand-blown glass ornament by John Sawyer, a wood carving by Bob Carney, a stained-glass window hanging by Les Johnston, and an oil painting of Minister’s Island Trail by Norman Richard. Reverend Natasha Pearen has also contributed a handmade quilt, while Johnson himself has offered “Six Desserts in ’26,” homemade and delivered to the winning bidder’s home next year.
The afternoon promises live music, tea, and refreshments, offering an atmosphere as warm as the cause it supports. Funds raised will go toward new outreach programs and community initiatives beyond the church’s regular operations, in keeping with the wishes of the anonymous donor.
“It’s an afternoon of generosity and fellowship,” said Johnson. “Every item tells a story — and every bid helps build something new for our community.”
Labours of Love takes place Sunday, October 26, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wesley United Church, 77 William Street, St. Andrews.
