My family has been part of Saint Andrews for generations — my grandchildren are the seventh generation to spend summers here. Like so many residents and seasonal homeowners, we are committed to the town’s heritage, natural beauty, and economic future.
That is why the proposed Market Wharf infill is so troubling. This is not a “repair.” It is a complete overhaul that will bury tidal waters, alter shoreline currents, and create pooling of debris and seaweed. The result would be an eyesore and an economic disaster for a town that depends on its harbour and its views.
Equally troubling are the unanswered questions: Why was no Environmental Impact Assessment required, when the Clean Environment Act lists infill expansions and major tourism developments? Why was only one engineering firm consulted? Why have no visual renderings been released to the public?
Saint Andrews deserves transparency and lower-impact alternatives. Once the harbour is altered, it cannot be undone. Council must pause this project before it’s too late.
