38-year-old man arrested following copper theft

RCMP in St. George say a 38-year-old man from Seeley’s Cove has been charged in connection to copper theft in the area.

On July 14, people said they received a report of a copper theft at a telecommunications tower on Seeley’s Cove Road.

“That location had recently been targeted several times before,” police said in the release.

According to the RCMP a member of the remotely piloted aircraft systems unit captured images from the air.

“During the search, the member located a large quantity of copper wire near a recreational vehicle,” the release said. 

Police arrested the 38-year-old man who was on conditions at the time.

“Later the same day, police executed a search warrant at a residence and property in connection with the investigation,” the release said. “They located and seized approximately 1,000 metres of copper wire, estimated to be valued at more than $16,000.” 

On July 15, Cody Babineau appeared in provincial court in Saint John and was charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property, according to the RCMP

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on July 23, 2026.
