Six candidates vie for Saint Andrews council seats

Six candidates have registered for the four seats in the Ward 3 byelection in Saint Andrews.

The candidates include Charlotte Bartlett, Charlie Creaser, Kurt Gumushel, Lee Heenan, Kevin W. Kiley and M. Scott Masson.

Candidates have the opportunity to withdraw their name until 5 p.m. Monday, June 1.

Coun. Anette Harland and Coun. Darrell Weare were acclaimed during the May 11 general election. Steve Neil was also elected as mayor. There will be no election for those seats.

Neil and the new incoming council will be tasked with the Market Wharf and Square project, which will continue to be a primary focus as it enters a new phase this summer.

A municipal plan is awaiting approval by the new council, which is due by January 2028.

The outgoing council will be operating under restricted powers until a new council is elected in June, according to The Department of Environmental and Local Government.

Section 56(1) through section 56(3) outline the five powers stripped from the town’s council.

Neil said he was excited and ready to hit the ground running once a new council is elected.

One day of advance voting is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 13, and the official election day is June 22. The polls will be open both days from 10 a.m. until 8p.m.
