David Coon to step down as Green Party leader

David Coon has announced he will step down as the leader of the New Brunswick Green Party.

“It has been such an honour to serve New Brunswickers as the leader of the Green Party,” Coon said. “I entered politics 14 years ago with the goal of bringing the concerns of everyday New Brunswickers to the floor of the Legislative Assembly and bringing a Green perspective to solving our province’s biggest issues.”

Coon represents the riding of Fredericton-Lincoln.

According to the party, under his leadership the party’s popular vote grw by 200 per cent between 2010 and 2024 elections.

“In 2014, Coon became the first elected Green in Canada outside of British Columbia when he was elected as the MLA for Fredericton South,” a release from Coon said.

Two other MLAs have been elected under his leadership tenure, Megan Mitton and Kevin Arseneau.

“I am so proud to have helped build the Green Party into a truly provincial party, with support from Anglophones, Acadians, Indigenous people and newcomers from every corner of the province,” Coon said. “I want to thank the tens of thousands of New Brunswickers who have voted Green during my leadership, as well as the countless volunteers that have made this success possible.”

The Green Party of New Brunswick said in the release it will make an announcement on a leadership convention in the coming weeks.
