Largely new Eastern Charlotte council sworn in

John Craig has been sworn in as Eastern Charlotte’s mayor for his sixth consecutive term as part of Charlotte County municipal government.

The ceremony was held on May 25. Craig said he feels good to have it completed so the council can start moving forward.

“I think with the council that the people gave me, it’s going to be a very easy job,” Craig said. “Because I [have] a very good diverse council.”

Last weekend, the council went through a full day of training.

The Local Governance Commission recommended mandatory training for municipal leaders and staff but only voluntary training was offered by the province.

Craig said staff from the Department of Local Government assisted the council with their training.

According to Craig, the orientation and training went very well. The entire council was in attendance.

Craig also said he plans to put the council through training once more in two years, the mid-way point of their mandate.

“They’re all chomping at the bit to get going, they want to learn, and they have lots to learn,” he said.

He said the training is good for him as well. According to Craig, he has been in municipal government for nineteen years and things are constantly changing.

“I think the day you think you know everything is the day you shouldn’t be involved with local government,” he said.

Adam Hatt was selected by the council to serve as deputy mayor.

The new council is composed of Patty Borthwick (Ward 4), Matthew Hall (Ward 5), Adam Hatt, David Hatt (At Large), Logan Martin (Ward 1), Sam Rubin  (Ward 3), Lucy Stevens (Ward 6), Michael Thompson (Ward 2).
