A 39-year-old man has been sentenced following a traffic-related incident in Oak Bay.
On May 18, members of St. Stephen RCMP were conducting proactive patrols in Oak Bay when a vehicle was seen being operated in a dangerous manner.
“Police activated their emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the driver failed to stop and fled the area at high speed,” the release said. “Members were able to quickly locate the vehicle and successfully deployed a spike belt, which safely disabled the vehicle and brought it to a stop.”
A 39-year-old man exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police.
Ryan Beaumaster appeared in Saint John Provincial Court on May 19. He was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, and operating a motor vehicle while being prohibited, the release said.
On July 16, Beaumaster returned to court and was sentenced to 14 months in jail. He was also prohibited from operating a vehicle for six years.
“This investigation highlights the important work our frontline officers do every day to keep our roads and communities safe,” Sgt. Pierre Ladouceur, with the St. Stephen RCMP, said in the release. “Through proactive patrols, our officers identified dangerous driving behaviour, launched an investigation, and successfully brought the matter before the courts. The vigilance and dedication demonstrated by our members reflect our ongoing commitment to road safety and protecting the public.”
