Fundraisers organized for displaced St. George residents, food bank

Several individuals and local organizations in Eastern Charlotte have stepped up to assist those displaced from a building in St. George following a fire.

About 22 apartment units were in the building owned by Atlantic Baptist Housing, alongside several commercial customers including the St. George Food Bank and Community Living, Extra Mural Services and one physiotherapists office.

These fundraisers have been set up and are ongoing:

Karen Sturgeon – Raffle Tickets

A raffle ticket for a basket of local goodies and $50 in cash. Tickets are on sale for $5 each or three for $10. All proceeds will go toward assisting individuals who were living in the building, but also the food bank. Draw will take place at the St. George Legion Open Mic Jam on Jan. 22.

50/50 from Faith Avery

The 50/50 proceeds will go toward helping those displaced. Tickets are five for $5. All e-transfers should be sent to faith.e.avery@gmail.com. Information needed is the individuals full name, phone number on the e-transfer. Draw on Feb. 14.

Hillary’s Hope for Hunger

The organization will be holding an emergency food drive this coming Saturday, Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. George Masonic Hall (lower level) at 2 Carleton Street in St. George. Mark Downey from Charlotte FM is expected to broadcast live from the event.

“I realize it’s a big ask right after Christmas. This is our community. These are our most vulnerable. Please, help me restock those shelves,” said Patty Borthwick, Hillary’s Mom and founder of HHFH.

Pennfield Lions Club Accepting Donations

Eastern Charlotte Lion’s Club in Pennfield will be collecting donations again tonight to help replenish the food bank’s losses. t It is located at 5275-5263, NB-175, and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Repeat Boutique Open

The thrift store opened its doors to residents from Granite Town, the name of the building. They are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

St. George Elementary School Food Drive

Students from St. George Elementary will be accepting donations for the food bank for three weeks. The first week is cereal, the second is pasta, and sauce and the third is canned food. Items can be sent to school with the students.

Fundy Middle High School Basketball Game Food Drive

On Jan. 8, at 7:35 p.m. the students are expected to play a varsity boys basketball game, but will be accepting food donations at the door.

Anglican Parish of St. Andrews Gift Card Drive

The Anglican Parish of St. Andrews is asking for donations of President’s Choice gift cards of any amount in support of the St. George Food Bank. Several locations are open to accept donations:

Parish Office, 75 King Street, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Craft Guild Meeting, 75 King Street, Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
All Saints Church, 77 King Street, Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
All Saints Church, 77 King Street, Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Cash donations are welcome, but should be clearly marked “St. George Food & Area Food Bank.” Donations can also be picked up at your home, the Parish asks you phone 506-529-8662.
