UPDATE: Inmate captured following nearly 12 hour search in Saint John

Saint John Police Force says 44-year-old Darel Dalgleish has been arrested and is in custody nearly 12 hours after he escaped custody at the Saint John Correction Facility.

Dalgleish was seen, according to a previous release from the Saint John Police Force, squeezing through the fence “and then eventually evaded capture of pursuing correctional officers”

He was in custody awaiting trial for assault and violation of release orders. Dalgleish was located in 400-block of Westmorland Road, according to police.

Police said previously it received the call around 9:28 a.m. on Nov. 3. In an email, St. Sgt. Matthew Weir, a spokesperson for the SJPF, said the delay in reporting the information to the public was due to “their ongoing efforts to gather information and search the area. The release was also postponed to ensure the inclusion of the most recent and accurate photos available from the jail.”

“Patrol officers were able to promptly respond to the area, establishing a large perimeter and set up vehicle checkpoints,” the release said previously. “Additional officers coordinated their efforts to conduct a thorough search of the vicinity using a drone, as well as, a canine unit.”

Weir said the shift of officers that responded to the call in the morning “responded adequately and all available resources were dedicated to the call.”

“The shift continued to follow leads in the investigation throughout the day,” he said in an email. “During shift change the next shift of officers were thoroughly briefed on the situation and they set out right away to continue following leads. The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shift change.”

Weir said Dalgleish was found in the same clothing but was very dirty and cold.

According to Weir, additional charges including escaping custody and obstructing a peace officer are pending. Dalgleish is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 14 to make a plea on two counts assault with a weapon.
