Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Louise Imbeault as New Brunswick’s 33rd Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick.
Imbeault replaces Brenda Murphy, the province’s first openly LGBTQ Lieutenant Governor.
According to a release from the Prime Minister’s office, Imbeault is a respected journalist, a dedicated women’s rights advocate, and a lifelong champion of the Acadian community.
“I congratulate Louise Imbeault on her appointment as the new Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. Her dedication to and leadership in the Acadian community is enduring, and I am confident she will continue to serve the people of New Brunswick with distinction in her new role,” Trudeau said in the release.
Imbeault worked for Radio-Canada Acadie and is a member of the Order of Moncton, the Order of New Brunswick, and the Order of Canada.
New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt also congratulated Imbeault on her appointment.
“I am eager to see her take on this important role and all that it entails, including helping to promote our province, recognizing its incredible people, and supporting the causes we hold dear,” Holt said in a statement. “With her background in journalism, la Francophonie, culture, and social justice, Louise Imbeault brings the kind of experience and understanding we need to her new role.”
Both Trudeau and Holt thanked Brenda Murphy for her service and was appointed in 2019. Lieutenant governors typically serve terms of five years and are representatives of King Charles III.
