Megan Mitton is seeking leadership of the New Brunswick Green Party.
She is one of only two members of the Green Party, but has represented the riding of Tantramar for three terms.
“I’m seeking the leadership of the Green Party of New Brunswick because I’m even more certain now than when I was elected as MLA eight years ago that we need deep change in New Brunswick,” Mitton said in a release.
Current leader David Coon announced his decision to step down in June.
“It has been such an honour to serve New Brunswickers as the leader of the Green Party,” Coon said. “I entered politics 14 years ago with the goal of bringing the concerns of everyday New Brunswickers to the floor of the Legislative Assembly and bringing a Green perspective to solving our province’s biggest issues.”
She said in the release she has a strong vision for New Brunswick — one “‘where climate action is prioritized as a way to strengthen and sustain New Brunswick for generations to come.’ ”
Mitton currently serves as the party’s deputy leader and submitted her paperwork this week to become a leadership candidate.
According to the party’s executive director, Genevieve MacRae, leadership candidates have from August 4 to September 12 to submit their applications, with the list of registered candidates to be announced on September 28.
MacRae said in a release New Brunswickers must become Green Party members by November 21 to be eligible to vote in the leadership election.
A new leader is expected to be announced on Dec. 5.
