Nominations open for N.B. byelections

Nominations open for N.B. byelections

Nominations for five byelections have opened including for Ward 3 in Saint Andrews.

The election for Ward 3 was cancelled by Elections New Brunswick due the death of former acting mayor Kate Akagi.

Both Annette Harland and Darrell Weare were acclaimed to their seats in Bayside and Chamcook.

However, the election for mayor went ahead — with a 62 per cent voter turnout. Eligible voters elected Steve Neil to the position by 1,071 votes.

Byelections in Ward 3 of Saint Andrews and in Ward 2 of Grand Lake were ordered by the chief electoral officer after the death of candidates in those contests during the May 11 elections,” the release from ENB said.

Of the remaining byelections, two are scheduled for Nashwaak and one in Grand-Bouctouche.

“As these are all new elections, anyone wishing to offer as a candidate in these byelections will have to follow the standard procedures of filling out nomination papers with the signatures of at least 10 nominators and filing them with the local municipal returning officer,” Kim Poffenroth, New Brunswick’s chief electoral officer, said.

Nominations close on May 29 at p.m. for all byelections. Voters go to the polls on June 22.
