Saint Andrews elects four new councillors

Saint Andrews voters in Ward 3 have cast their ballots for the four remaining seats on council.

Charlotte Bartlett, Lee Heenan, Kurt Gumushel and Scott Masson will represent constituents in Saint Andrews proper.

Bartlett received the most votes at 582, followed by Heenan, Gumushel and Masson.

Heenan and Gumushel were incumbent councillors.

A byelection was called following the death of former acting mayor Kate Akagi, who was running for a council seat in Ward 3. Elections New Brunswick cancelled the election scheduled for May 11 in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act.

Steve Neil was elected mayor in the May election. Coun. Annette Harland, representing Chamcook, and Coun. Darrell Weare, representing Bayside, were acclaimed.

Voter turnout was about 20 per cent lower than the general election held last month, coming in around 43 per cent.

Council is expected to be sworn in on June 29.
