SiRT investigating after male injured during arrest in St. Stephen

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a male allegedly sustained injuries during an arrest by the New Brunswick RCMP in St. Stephen.

According to a release, the organization said on July 28, the RCMP were called to a resident in St. Stephen for someone causing a disturbance.

“While on scene, RCMP officers arrested a male and transported him to police cells,” the release said. “While in cells, he complained of extreme pain in his leg.”

The male was transported and admitted to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken leg, according to SiRT.

SiRT said it was contacted on Aug. 9 by the RCMP, saying they were notified by the male that his injuries were sustained during the arrest.

“Due to the serious nature of the injury, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation,” the release said.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of a police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.
