Tyler and Deane — two harp seals at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in Saint Andrews — have died.
“These events were completely unexpected with no visual signs of illness or loss of appetite,” a post from the organization said.
The pair were a father-daughter duo that were relocated to the Huntsman several years ago.
“A necropsy carried out by specialists from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island did not identify a cause of death,” the post on social media said.
According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, harp seals have a life span of 25 to 40 years. DFO said males and females are often similar in size, averaging 1.6 metres in length and 130 to 150 kg in weight.
Snorkel, a harbour seal who is a little more than a month away from his 20th birthday, is doing well based on continued monitoring of his behaviour and appetite, the organization said.
The Courier has reached out to the Huntsman Marine Science Centre.
