31-year-old man charged with manslaughter in woman’s death

A 31-year-old man has been charged in the death of 26-year-old Sarah Teakles, who is from Rothesay, according to the New Brunswick RCMP.

Calvin Burns-Smith appeared in Saint John Provincial Court on April 22 and was charged with manslaughter and indignity to a dead body, police said in a release.

RCMP in St. George originally received a report of a missing woman from Musquash on April 15.

Two days later, on April 17, the major crimes unit took over the investigation. One the same day, police said they located the woman’s vehicle and her body in Maces Bay with the assistance of police dog services.

On April 21, police said Burns-Smith was already in custody on unrelated matters after being arrested by the Saint John Police Force and was then arrested by the RCMP in connection with the investigation.

Burns-Smith has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on April 28.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who has information that could help further the investigation is asked to contact the RCMP Major Crime Unit at 1-888-506-RCMP (7267). Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca.
