40-year-old man arrested in St. Stephen in ongoing hate-motivated crime investigation

RCMP in New Brunswick say they have arrested a 40-year-old man following a disturbance in the community of St. Stephen, which is now being investigated as hate-motivated.

In a release, police said it responded to a call in front of a residence on Rose Street in St. Stephen.

“A man was reported to have been yelling and uttering threats at a community member, outside the community member’s home,” the release said. “The man fled the scene before police arrived, however, police were able to quickly identify a suspect.”

RCMP went on to say that throughout their investigation, it learned that the person had been involved in similar disturbances involving other members of the community “on more than one occasion,” according to the release.

“On Nov. 19, 2024, police arrested the 40-year-old man without incident about their investigation,” the release said.

The man was later released on conditions, including not to contact the victims.

“There is no place for discrimination or hatred in our communities”, says Sgt. Scott Mackenzie of the St. Stephen RCMP. “We understand that incidents such as this are upsetting to members of the public, and we want everyone to know that we are conducting a thorough investigation. We encourage all victims and witnesses to come forward and report any potential hate-motivated crime or incident to your local police.”

The RCMP is also encouraging anyone who experiences crimes to report it online to help the police in data collection to help them identify trends in violence within communities.

The investigation is ongoing.
