COLUMN: Have you heard of the Quoddy Quilters?

For many years women from St Andrews, St George, Letete, Waweig, Bonny River, New River Beach and Pennfield have been meeting twice a month to share quilting knowledge, creative inspiration, materials, finished projects, all mixed liberally with shared laughter and support. Our Guild began in 2002 and during the many years since, the members of the Quoddy Quilters Guild have been making quilts to provide warmth and comfort for those we love, and for others within our communities. Together we have honoured veterans in Charlotte County by creating Quilts of Valour, quilts for Ukranian newcomers in 2020, quilts for the Palliative Care Unit at Saint John Regional, quilts for cancer patients, and new born babies. We quietly work behind the scenes with our love of quilting.

In order to showcase some of the amazing and prolific quilted creations made by our members, we organize an annual Show and Sale at a local church, where we also donate funds collected for the hosting church. At each Show we exhibit one quilt made by all members and hand quilted that is won in a raffle, the proceeds from all ticket sales going directly to support the St Andrews and Area Open Door Program and St George and Area Food Bank.

We have also gifted the St. Stephen Food Bank with turkeys for Christmas hampers and made monetary donations to the Red Cross during the Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. For more than 2 decades, Quoddy Quilters have given an annual scholarship through the Fundy Community Foundation, that provides grants to students and addresses issues related to women’s social, environmental, financial, and physical well being.

This past year we contributed a quilt block that pictures the Greens Point Lighthouse in answer to a request made to all Quilt Guilds in New Brunswick for a block representative of our region that helped in the creation of the Unity New Brunswick Quilt which will be included in the permanent collection of the Museum.

It is with great pleasure that the Quoddy Quilters Guild is able to present a cheque to Wesley United Church from our 2026 Christmas themed Raffle Quilt, for $720.00 to support the local Food Bank.

New members are always welcome, no experience necessary, to join us and discover the joy and fun of quilting. We meet the second Tuesday of every month and car pool to attend meetings. For further information feel free to call 519 400-2042 or email pcawleyreid@yahoo.ca
