Dr. Yves Léger named chief medical officer of health

A familiar face has been named the next chief medical officer of health in New Brunswick.

Dr. Yves Léger has been acting in the role since December 2023 after the resignation of Dr. Jennifer Russell.

Russell, who had been in the role for about eight years, went on to become executive director of the new Institute of Population Health at the University of New Brunswick.

“Dr. Léger brings extensive experience in public health, as well as a deep understanding of the New Brunswick context,” Health Minister John Dornan said in a news release.

“He has done an excellent job as acting chief medical officer, and he has my full confidence moving forward.”

Léger has held several roles at Public Health since 2007, including regional medical officer of health, acting deputy chief medical officer and acting chief medical officer.

The Beausoleil native studied medicine at l’Université de Sherbrooke and completed his residency in public health and preventive medicine at the University of Toronto before returning to practise in New Brunswick.
