The Canadian Coast Guard says four crew members were rescued off the coast of Grand Manan Island over the weekend.
In a statement, it said the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax was advised of a capsized fishing vessel – on the first day of the lobster fishing season off Grand Manan Island.
The vessel – Nick & Ash 2021 – was located approximately 6 nautical miles north of North Head Grand Manan.
“All four crew members were safely rescued by two fishing vessels that were in the area,” said the statement.
According to the statement, the CCGS Geliget was asked to respond in case medical assistance was required but “stood down when it was confirmed everyone was in good condition.”
“The Canadian Coast Guard will continue to monitor the area for signs of marine pollution,” the statement said.
It is unclear how the vessel capsized.
It clarified that owners are responsible for addressing hazards and pollution caused by their vessel, including costs of cleanup or repairs and any remediation action taken by the CCG.
According to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, 84 per cent of all fishing-related fatalities recorded between 1999 and 2010 occurred when vessels capsized, foundered, or sank, or when persons fell overboard.
