‘If you need it, take it:’ Saint Andrews woman steps up for her community

Paula Ross has been volunteering at the St. George’s food bank and the experience had her thinking about the people in her community – Saint Andrews – who might need a little extra help.

So, she started a community clothing line. On it, pinned with clothes pins, are mittens, socks, hats, gloves, and even t-shirts.

“I felt that Saint Andrews really needed one,” she said. “You don’t realize until you start getting involved how much of a need there is actually out there.”

Ross said the items were being taken quickly and still are. Many organizations in Charlotte County are reporting an increased need, including in St. Stephen.

During the Santa’s Helpers telethon on CHCO-TV, Mayor Brad Henderson said the families who applied for the program – which helps give presents to kids and families at Christmas time – doubled this year.

According to Saint Croix Progressive Conservative MLA Kathy Bockus, the food bank has reported to her that the number of monthly hampers of food has increased from 330 to 489.

However, Ross isn’t the only one contributing items to the clothing line.

“The community has started adding,” she said in an interview with The Courier. “Somebody came and put hand towels in a Ziploc baggie, and they were one of the first things to go. Somebody else has put up Christmas ornaments and there are only two Christmas ornaments left.”

On Dec. 13, Ross said she had to refill the line though, as many of the items were taken, which she said is a sure sign of the need in the community.

Ross explained the main thing is people are getting what they need, even if it is something small.

“It’s just overwhelming, there is such a need for people,” Ross said. “My saying is if you need it, take it, and if you can donate it, donate it.”

There is a clothing line also set up in St. George and the line is set up beside All Saint Church on King Street.
