Applications are now open for the low-income seniors benefit, which has increased to $616 this year.
“We recognize that many low-income seniors face financial challenges, particularly with the rising cost of living,” said Lyne Chantal Boudreau, the minister responsible for seniors.
According to the province, it supports 50,000 seniors in New Brunswick.
In order to qualify, a individual must be 60 years of age or older, a resident of New Brunswick, and receiving one of the following federal benefits under the Old Age Security Act:
- Guaranteed Income Supplement (must be 65 years or older).
- Allowance Program (must be between 60-64 years old).
- Allowance for the Survivor Program (must be between 60-64 years old).
The government said only one benefit will be eligible if spouses live together, but if they live separately like one in a nursing home, both will be eligible.
“We are committed to supporting seniors so they can live with dignity and financial security,” said Social Development Minister Cindy Miles.
Eligible seniors should apply before Dec. 31. People wishing to pick up an application can do so at a Service NEw Brunswick location.
Applications can be submitted online.
